Dishwasher Malfunction

Things to Do to Prevent Dishwasher Problems

A dishwasher usually lasts about 10 years, and it’s important that it be well-maintained to keep working that long or even longer. The good news is that dishwasher maintenance is quick and simple. Don’t hesitate to ask your appliance repair professional to learn more about it.

Use Only Dishwasher Detergent

This seems trivial, but if you want your dishwasher to last as long as it should, you must only use a detergent made for it. Do not use laundry detergent or any sort of liquid soap for the body or for hand-washing dishes. They not only don’t clean dishes well but also cause floods of suds that need to be cleaned up.

Keep the Filter Clean

A dishwasher works better with a clean filter. Some food residue is bound to stick to the filter, and it should be cleaned by hand with soap and warm water about every month. If you use your dishwasher often, you may need to clean it more than this. One sign that the filter needs cleaning is that your dishes stop looking and feeling as clean as usual. You’ll also notice an odor from a dirty filter.

Wash Only Full Loads

Running the dishwasher when it’s not full wastes hot water, raises your energy bill, and puts stress on the dishwasher. On the other hand, don’t overload your dishwasher. Overloading makes it hard for all of the dishes to be cleaned, and that means you’ll have to put them back in the dishwasher. Again, this wastes water and energy and can lower the dishwasher’s lifespan. The idea is to put as many dishes in the dishwasher as you can without any of them touching.

Don’t Use the Hottest Cycle

Even though you may be tempted to use the dishwasher’s hottest cycle if your dishes are really grungy, don’t. Very hot water runs up your energy bill and can actually break delicate glassware. An ideal temperature for your dishwasher is about 130 to 140 degrees Fahrenheit. That should dissolve any gunk on your dishes. Very few household dishwashers need to be hot enough to sterilize dishware or cooking ware.

Keep the Gasket Clean

A clean gasket is watertight, which is crucial to keeping water from leaking on your kitchen floor. A dirty gasket is also a breeding ground for pathogens. It’s a good idea to clean the gasket when you clean your filter. Once again, white vinegar is the ideal cleaning product. Use about a third of a cup of vinegar to two-thirds cup of lukewarm water.
